BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The parents of a 3-year-old boy in western Kentucky said their son is reaching the finish line in his battle with cancer.

What You Need To Know

  • Micah and Samantha Baker of western Kentucky had their life turned upside down when their son, Auggie Baker, was 2 years old

  • They found out he had leukemia

  • What was supposed to be a quick stop at a Louisville hospital turned into hospital say that lasted nearly a month

  • Now, more than a year later, the pain and heartache is almost over

“He’s a trooper; he’s resilient and strong," said Micah Baker, the father of 3-year-old Auggie Baker.

What he’s gone through makes his childhood different from most his age.

“When your kid is so young, you’re not expecting a life-changing diagnosis," Micah said.

Micah and his wife, Samantha Baker, found out Auggie had leukemia when he was just 2 years old.

"Your whole life was changed; you don't know what's up and what's down," Samantha Baker said. "It was really hard."

What was supposed to be a quick stop at a Louisville hospital for the Baker family turned into hospital say that lasted nearly a month.

“Emotionally, I was wrecked," Samantha said. "Seeing your child go through that, I wish I could take everything.”

But Auggie pressed on, going to weekly doctor’s appointments at Norton Children’s in Louisville.

“He knew something was wrong, but he knew they were taking care of him," Samantha said.

More than a year later, the pain and heartache is nearly over. Auggie is making steady progress, as his appointments have slowed to just one monthly.

For Micah and Samantha, it’s a relief knowing their child will be OK.

"It’s nice that we’re almost at the finish line," Samantha said. "I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself.”
