LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Zoo is seeking public input to help name one of its newest additions, a male Sumatran tiger cub born on July 23, 2024. Norton Children’s is sponsoring the opportunity to vote on his name to mark the first time a Sumatran tiger cub has been at the zoo in 20 years.
Zookeepers have selected three potential names for the cub that reflect his importance and honor his parents. The names are:
- Satu (sah-too): Means “one” in Indonesian. The zoo says there are less than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild, and every single cub is vital for the survival of the endangered species.
- Saya Sambal (Sigh-ya-sah-m-ball): Honors his dad, Kami Sambal, who passed away on Aug. 20, 2024. Kami’s name means “we are spicy sauce” in Indonesian, referring to the wild nature of tigers, which are not domesticated and are often trafficked for pet trade. “Saya Sambal” means “I am spicy sauce.”
- Kaji (kah-gee): A combination of both parents’ names, Kami and Jingga, representing how their legacy will live on through the cub.
Voting begins Sept. 23 and continues through Oct. 8, 2024, at 11 p.m. Guests can vote once daily at the zoo’s special Name the Tiger Cub website.
The mother and cub are currently off exhibit to bond, the zoo said. Guests can see them via the zoo’s live cam.
