One Louisville teacher was recognized for his inspiring work through music and dance in the classroom, winning a cruise vacation as a reward for his dedication.

It's Zachary Boone's second year as a dance teacher at Lincoln Performing Arts Elementary School. He was nominated for Norwegian Cruise Line’s "Giving Joy" contest, which recognizes teachers who are devoted to their students and committed to bringing joy to the classroom.

“It gives me a lot of pride, not only with the work that I do, but just to see that (I was) recognized by so many of my peers and so many of my friends and family as well," Boone said.

Boone was one of 20 to get invited to a two-day inaugural event in Boston aboard the brand-new Norwegian Aqua cruise ship. He said the trip is a full-circle moment as he started his dance career on a cruise ship.

“It's been a really exciting opportunity to get to go back to that cruise ship life for a little while and revisit some of that previous career," Boone said.

Melissa Case, principal of Lincoln Performing Arts Elementary School, said the contest allows the community to understand how committed teachers are to empowering young minds.

“He is amazing teaching students from our little bitty kindergartners to our students in grades four and five who have chosen dance as their special area," Case said.

Boone said he thinks the recognition brings attention to the importance of teaching and developing relationships with students. He added he looks forward to next year, when he can nominate another amazing teacher.
