What You Need To Know

  • A new grant will help the water quality of Warren County's Basil Griffin Park

  • The Kentucky Division of Water approved the grant of $309,000

  • Within the wetland, new plants will grow that thrive in wet conditions

  • It will also help with flooding

Basil Griffin Park is receiving the money. Nikki Koller, director of Warren County Storm Water, said this grant will help improve the quality of water, by making some areas a wetland.

“It’s going to create a little ecosystem that’s more holistic that can help filter the water before it gets to the cave and just act as nature wanted it to," Koller said.

The Kentucky Division of Water approved the grant of $309,000. Within the wetland, new plants will grow that thrive in wet conditions.

“We’re trying to turn that area that is always a little bit wet, that doesn’t really grow grass, so we’re just going to expand it a little bit and plant very specific plants for wetlands that like to have their roots wet," Koller said.

Koller added this will help with flooding.

“This doesn’t have to be a hidden area of the park anymore that people don’t interact with," Koller said. "This could be a main feature from an education standpoint and getting people outside."

Project Stormwater will also be working with Western Kentucky University's Center for Human Geoenvironmental Studies program to collect data for the project.
