GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Toyota Motor Manufacturing Kentucky (TMMK) unveiled a $1 million investment in Scott County Schools through its 4-T Academy program in July, where the sounds of drilling fill the air.

What You Need To Know

  • Toyota Kentucky and Scott County Schools have begun their new work readiness partnership

  • High school juniors and seniors will split time between the classroom and Toyota's Georgetown plant

  • Students gain paid hands-on experience at Toyota and the potential for a full-time job after graduation

  • Nineteen students are in this year's cohort

The program, which has 19 students in this year's cohort, is designed to expand access to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Students take part in practical exercises to grasp the basics of manufacturing.

"I like more hands-on learning stuff, and I feel like this was easier for me,” said participant Tesla Hall, 16.

The initiative not only provides advanced manufacturing training but also offers a pathway to full-time employment at Toyota’s Georgetown plant upon graduation.

"Having students be more prepared and giving them an opportunity to come to work in a manufacturing facility that is changing, with technology becoming more important, is our goal,” said Jeff Hill, lead trainer at the 4-T Academy.

Though Hall is one of only two women in the program, she said she sees the opportunity as a chance to showcase the capabilities of women in traditionally male-dominated fields.

“Back in the day, there wasn’t really a lot of stuff that women could do when they stayed in the house," Hall said. "This gives us more opportunities and puts a better name out there for women."
