FLORENCE, Ky. — In northern Kentucky, a small yet vibrant Mexican business is making a significant impact. Fruit Land, a hub of Mexican culture and tradition, has been serving up a slice of its heritage to the local community since its opening in 2021.
As she cut through a ripe cantaloupe, Paloma Villasana, the 24-year-old owner of Fruit Land, described her offerings as the perfect fresh snack or an ideal start to an ice cream treat.
“Just some naturally fresh fruit with honey and then coconut shavings and granola,” Villasana said.
Fruit Land offers a unique twist to the traditional ice cream shop, infusing its products with the sweet and spicy flavors of Mexican cuisine. Villasana, who moved to Kentucky from Arizona with her family, longed for the flavors of her childhood.
“We wanted to bring our taste, you know, our snacks, our cravings, to the city. And that’s what we did. We brought home to the city,” Villasana explained.
The shop features a diverse menu, from homemade ice cream to fresh fruit salads and traditional Mexican candies. Villasana encourages everyone to try it, saying, “I definitely recommend that everybody from everywhere tries it. Because, you know, if you don’t risk anything, you won’t gain anything.”
Residents have responded positively, praising both food and the welcoming atmosphere. Meadow Barnett said, “The locals that come here and the people who own the restaurant are very kind, very sweet. Customer service is always amazing. And, yeah, I just feel like there’s no other place around here [like it].”
As Villasana reflected on all that Fruit Land and her family have accomplished, with a smile she said, “Just perfect.”
