LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The “License to Vote” Art Contest will return in 2025, after being on pause for nearly 14 years.

What You Need To Know

  • The "License to Vote" Art Contest returns in 2025

  • The contest is open to all Jefferson County public, private and parochial students

  • Students are invited to submit a simulated license plate related to voting, the electoral process, American patriotism, and more

  • Each school is invited to hold its own contest and select two finalists to represent them for the final judging and awards ceremony

The art contest is a partnership with the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office and is open to all Jefferson County public, private and parochial school students. Students are encouraged to design a license plate that advocates for responsible voting. The winning artwork is prominently displayed throughout the community, leading to the primary and general elections.

Students are invited to submit a simulated license plate related to voting, the electoral process, American patriotism, and more. The contest promotes the importance of voting and other civic duties.

Each August, school principals and teachers receive an invitation to participate in the contest, along with the contest rules and guidelines. They have until Nov. 22 to decide to participate. Each school selects a first and second place winner to represent them, with submissions due in March. These entries become finalists competing for grand prize packages. Finalists are invited to a final judging and awards ceremony at the Frazier History Museum on April 17, 2025.

Prizes include one day’s interest on $1 million, a personal computer and bag and tickets to local events. Each winner also receives private art lessons. Teachers of the grand prize winners are treated to a “Night on the Town,” while the schools of the grand prize winners receive a $500 gift certificate for school supplies.

After the contests, the grand-prize winning license plates are reproduced as posters and distributed to all Jefferson County schools and sponsors.
