WINCHESTER, Ky. — A Clark County Public Schools student is dead following an incident the morning of Tuesday, Sept. 3, as buses were headed to school.

McKenna Letcher, 15, was struck and killed by a school bus. The incident happened at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Ironworks Road in Winchester.

Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene around 6:45 a.m. The Clark County Public Schools confirmed Letcher was a freshman at George Rogers Clark High School.

According to the Clark County coroner, Letcher was trying to cross Veterans Memorial Parkway when the bus struck and killed her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A CCPS districtwide letter confirmed it was a Clark County bus that struck the student. In the letter, superintendent Dustin Howard said the entire CCPS family is "heartbroken." Howard said pastoral staff, grief counselors and other mental health staff are available at all schools, including George Rogers Clark.

Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., offered his condolences to the family and Clark County community. 

"My heart aches for the family and friends of this precious child lost in this tragedy," Beshear said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Please join Britainy and me in lifting up the Clark County community in prayers of peace and comfort." 

State Sen. Greg Elkins, R-Winchester, released a statement reading, "My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends who are enduring unimaginable pain during this time. No words can truly express the sorrow we all feel. As a parent and a member of this community, I am heartbroken by this loss ... In this time of profound grief, I urge all of us to come together as a community to support the grieving family and to hold our children a little closer. Let us also reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the lives of every child in our state.”

The Clark County Sheriff's Office and Clark County Coroner's Office are still investigating the incident.
