LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville Metro Police Department said an officer shot a man Wednesday outside the Walmart near Outer Loop and New Cut Road.

Kentucky State Police were chasing a car involved in a crash at New Cut and Outer Loop. KSP arrested one person while another man ran toward the store. After a KSP trooper found an off-duty LMPD officer, who called for backup, the man entered the Walmart with two guns. LMPD said it chased him around the store before he went back outside and tried to carjack a woman waiting in the pharmacy drive-thru.

The suspect was in the car’s passenger seat when the LMPD officer asked him several times to get out. Louisville’s interim police chief, Paul Humphrey, said, when the suspect wouldn’t get out of the car, the officer shot him several times. The man was taken to the University of Louisville Hospital with “non life-threatening injuries,” according to Humphrey.

LMPD said its Public Integrity Unit is handling the investigation. The officer will be placed on leave, and body camera video will be released in 10 days under department protocol.

This is a developing story. We will add more details when they become available.
