Holidays often mean long security lines and crowds at airports, which led Jalyn Vaughn to book her trip to visit her girlfriend in Kentucky days before the long weekend.

“I don’t like being in a travel environment with a whole bunch of people ... so that’s what I’m doing here, (coming) in early ahead of time,” Vaughn said.

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport said it expects nearly 160,000 travelers over the Labor Day weekend, an 8% increase from last year. Mindy Keshner, CVG spokesperson, said she urges travelers to arrive early and be prepared.

“We have security wait times and our concession options on our CVG website,” Kershner said. “Also, a big tip is [to] download your airline app, and that way, you can get real-time flight notifications. You can check in before you leave, check your bag, things like that.”

As Vaughn gathered her belongings to head to her gate, she said she felt happy to be part of the quiet before the storm.

“It’s not that many people,” she said. “I’m not going to lie; I’m kind of shocked. I don’t even have to go this early, but I guess I’ll get something to eat.”
