"I am proud of the work we have already accomplished at KSU to launch this significant partnership," said Koffi C. Akakpo, KSU president. "We are excited to work together to make positive impacts throughout the commonwealth."

KSU said it will launch three mobile health units providing health care to rural communities in eastern Kentucky, west Louisville and western Kentucky. KDPH will support its efforts to offer screenings, health care and nutritional education programming. The university added the initiative is designed to support underserved regions of the state, addressing issues such as diabetes, blood pressure and a range of chronic diseases.

Service offerings and locations were decided based on research KSU conducted, it said. KDPH is also assisting KSU with developing a curriculum for a future public health program, and the two sides are developing an academic program that will include government relations and support public health needs.

"Public health supports an easier path to a healthier life for all Kentuckians," said Steven Stack, KDPH commissioner. "Those interested in entering the field can choose from a full spectrum of services from newborn screenings and nutrition education to administering vaccines, medication programs and so much more."

"The professional development opportunities, provided through our program, will help students find their niche in improving health outcomes for large populations."
