LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The 125th Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention is taking place this week in Louisville, and while it's designed for attendees to receive information and attend workshops, a large part of the event is also building connections.

What You Need To Know

  • Louisville is hosting the 125th Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention and the second annual VFW Cornhole Series

  • Veteran-owned KC Crew, the largest adult sports league in Kansas City, is hosting the cornhole tournament

  • The proceeds of the games support the VFW PACT Act benefit program

With one toss at a time, some participants are taking part in the second annual VFW Cornhole Series, such as Steven Hawkins and Sean Griffin, who are practicing their techniques to bag their way to victory.

“We're excited ... hopefully, (I) redeem myself from last year because I played last year, and we'll hopefully take the title back to Georgia," Griffin said.

Though it may be fun and games, it’s more than just playing a game of cornhole. Christopher Johnson, VFW Foundation grant manager, said the proceeds of games benefit the VFW PACT Act benefit program.

“For all these veterans who have been at war, having been exposed to different type of burn pits and things like that, that messed up their lives right now," Johnson said. "We raise this money, and (with) all this money, the funds go back to our unmet needs department that gets out to these soldiers for help.”

Veteran-owned KC Crew, the largest adult sports league in the Kansas City area, presents the cornhole series. Greg Malloy of KC Crew said this event allows everyone and anyone to get involved in the fun for a great cause.

“Anyone (can) throw a cornhole bag; that's the beauty of it," Malloy said. "There's a bunch of different custom board sponsors out here. Between all those, we helped raise about $30,000 for the VFW PACT Act benefits program”

Griffin said the event helps build camaraderie and allows veterans to relate to one another. He served in the U.S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division.

The convention takes place through Aug. 1 at the Kentucky International Convention Center in downtown Louisville.
