A widespread Microsoft outage impacted most of the world, from banks to airlines to media outlets and companies.

Escalating disruptions continued hours after the technology company said it was gradually fixing an issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack — and that a fix was on the way. The company said the problem occurred when it deployed a faulty update to computers running Microsoft Windows.

There is no indication when services may return to normal.

The website DownDectector, which tracks user-reported internet outages, recorded growing outages in services at Visa, ADT security and Amazon, and airlines including American Airlines and Delta.

Locally, the outage is impacting airports, universities and law enforcement, among others.

The Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport are experiencing the impacts of a widespread Microsoft outage that is affecting flights, banks, media outlets and companies around the world.

“Due to global technology issues, some airlines at the Louisville Muhammad Internation Airport are experiencing impacts to departing and arriving flights. Travelers are encouraged to check with their airline regarding their flight status. Airport systems and security checkpoints are operating normally,” said Natalie Chaudoin, director of public relations with Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.

The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport said they were aware that several carriers have been impacted by the issues. “Some carriers have been able to resolve the technology issues. Others are delaying, pausing or canceling flights,” the airport shared.

A number of flights at Blue Grass Airport have been delayed or canceled, including flights from Delta and American Airlines.

It urged passengers to check their airline for flight status before coming to the airport. “If you are picking up passengers, please be aware that flight delays may impact arrivals. We appreciate everyone’s patience as the airport and airlines work through this.

Across the U.S., the Federal Aviation Administration said the airlines United, American, Delta and Allegiant had all been grounded.

The University of Kentucky, including UK Healthcare hospitals and clinics, are also experiencing some disruptions due to issues with the cybersecurity platform Crowdstrike. The university said teams throughout the academic health system are continuing to assess the situation and working to minimize the impact on patient care and patient care activities.

CHI Saint Joseph Health was also affected by the outage. "We continut to provide safe, high-quality care to our patients and thank everyone for their patience as our teams take immediate action to restore any impacted systems," said Mary Branham, marketing director for CHI Saint Joseph Health. "Patients will be contacted directly if their appointments are affected."

This is a developing story. We will add more details when they become available.
