LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Right now, children across Kentucky are enjoying summer vacation, and many of them are learning different things in summer camps.
Under the hot Kentucky sun, 8-year-old Dalton Jockell and his friends are having a blast. He’s entering third grade this fall, but that’s not on his mind.
He’s focused on enjoying his very first summer camp at the Sun Valley Community Center in Louisville with approximately two dozen others, including his 13-year-old brother.
“You get (to) do math; you get to spend time with your friends," Jockell said. "You go on field trips.”
Anita Compton, community center supervisor, said she estimates about 250 children are attending summer camps and programs at community centers across metro Louisville. Louisville Parks and Recreation hosts the drop-off, full-day camps.
“We have eight weeks of activities ... arts and crafts, nature programs, where they can learn about nature," Compton said. "We have butterflies that are hatching right now in the office as they come out of the cocoon, so the kids get to learn about those.”
They also play team games like tag, go to the pool and head on weekly field trips. They’ve gone to Huber’s Farm, gone bowling and plan to go to Kentucky Kingdom and the Kentucky Science Center.
"They don’t have to sit at home and be bored all day," Compton said. "We don’t allow electronics in here during the day, so they’re not on their phones or iPads. It’s all activities, all day.”
Registration is required. There’s a onetime fee of $50. More information about camps, which run through July 26, can be found by calling Louisville Parks and Recreation at 502-574-7275.
