KENTUCKY — On this week's "In Focus Kentucky" program, we’re focusing on a new state law that expands insurance coverage for people seeking treatment for stuttering, which is a condition that disrupts the normal flow of speech.
Former Kentucky men’s basketball player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist spent time testifying before lawmakers in the Kentucky General Assembly using his voice to make a difference for those who stutter, which is a speech disorder Kidd-Gilchrist says he has dealt with his entire life.
Kidd-Gilchrist is best known for being a University of Kentucky men’s basketball champion and No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft by the Charlotte Bobcats, who later became a nine-year veteran as a professional basketball star. In 2021, he founded Change & Impact, Inc., a stuttering initiative with a mission to improve access to health care and expand services and resources for those who stutter.
During this segment, both Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., and Kidd-Gilchrist share their comments about Senate Bill 111 and how it will amplify awareness for the stuttering community.
