LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Last summer, the Federal Drug Administration approved Opill, an over-the-counter progestin-only birth control pill. Soon it will hit the shelves of most major pharmacies in the U.S.

What You Need To Know

  • Opill, an over-the-counter birth control pill, is hitting shelves soon

  • It will be $20 for a month's worth of pills or $50 for three months' worth of pills. A prescription is not needed

  • The Kentucky Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice supports efforts to increase accessibility to contraception

People will be able to purchase a month’s worth of Opill for $20 or three months’ worth for $50 without a prescription.

Barbara Berman, with the Kentucky Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, is glad the over-the-counter birth control pills will be an option for people to use.

KRCRC does advocacy work in Frankfort, educates the community about reproductive health, and connects with different religious groups to spread its message.

“Anything that we can add to decrease the chance of getting pregnant, the better,” said Berman.

Almost half of all pregnancies are unintended. Berman cited this as a reason that the KRCRC supports the accessibility of over-the-counter birth control pills.

Opill’s manufacturer says it is 98% effective when used as directed.
