LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The celebration of Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, takes place before the season of Lent and originates from French traditions.
Mardi Gras is a day full of lively parades, colorful costumes and food of all kinds. Catholic Charities of Louisville is doing its part to get ready to party.
“Red beans and rice with a Kielbasa sausage, and then we are also preparing gumbo. Where chef Dre is currently darkening up that rue, which is going to be the base and foundation for that gumbo,” said Common Table Executive Chef Makeda Woods.
Common Table is one of the Catholic Charities of Louisville’s 10 programs. The organization is dedicated to providing culinary arts training to people who face employment barriers.
Common Table helps Catholic Charities of Louisville for their fifth-annual Mardi Gras party.
“There’ll be table games, silent auction, there’ll be lots of food and we’ll have chef Makeda’s red beans and rice and gumbo there,” said Woods.
The party isn’t just for fun, it’s for good a cause.
“Common Table is just one of the programs we are going to be highlighting at the event. Refugees to culinary to expectant mothers to people in long-term care residencies. We do a lot of work within the community. Pretty much if you need help, catholic charities can find a place for you,” said Chief Advancement Officer of Catholic Charities of Louisville Ellen Hauber.
Now they are ready to celebrate the programs dedicated to lifting up Kentuckians.
“It’s really great to be a part of a program that is so meaningful and so impactful and a part of the catholic charities family,” said Woods.
Catholic Charities of Louisville’s fifth-annual Mardi Gras party, “Rouler,” is at the Mellwood Arts Center from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are available online.
