FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved $2,916,375 for sewer system repairs in a Letcher County town impacted by the 2022 Eastern Kentucky floods.

Using city labor and contractors, the City of Fleming-Neon will work to restore the system back to pre-disaster condition. According to FEMA, due to the incident, brackish floodwaters containing mud, silt and rocks made approximately 370 city-owned and maintained grinders inoperable.

Section 403 of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act authorizes funding for this Public Assistance (PA) project, the agency added. These funds reimburse eligible applicants for the cost of debris removal, life-saving emergency protective measures and the repair, replacement or restoration of disaster-damaged facilities such as buildings, roads and utilities.

The FEMA PA grant program helps communities recover from a federally declared disaster or emergency, and the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management (KYEM) will work with FEMA during all phases of the program.

According to FEMA, the federal share for this project is 75% of the eligible costs, while the state will provide 12% and the city will provide 13%.
