BOONE COUNTY, Ky. — Boone County Schools released a five-year strategic plan to ensure the schools in the district continue to grow and students thrive academically after Superintendent Matthew Turner announced his retirement.

What You Need To Know

  • Earlier this month, four-year superintendent Matthew Turner announced his retirement

  • Matthew Turner has served Boone County Schools in various roles over three decades

  • The five-year strategic plans contains four goals the district hopes to achieve by the year of 2028

Turner says Boone County Schools do more than just say their slogan.

“Achieving excellence together is not just a district slogan. It’s a Boone County School tradition,” he shared.

Since 2002, Turner has worked for Boone County schools in various roles and has spent that last few years working to help 20,000 students in the district readjust after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That journey is part of our district’s theory of action, which I helped develop. The concept that a highly collaborative professional learning community leads to students performing at high levels,” he said.

Earlier this month, Boone County Schools and community members designed a portrait of a graduate, which outlines where a student should be academically by the time they reach graduation. They say this is the foundation of their strategic plan and has resulted in the development of many programs, such as assessments for math and reading, and programs for virtual instruction.

While he is retiring at the end of next the 2023-24 school year, he says his work is not done.

During his tenure, Turner oversaw the opening of a brand-new elementary school and the renovation of the Rise Academy. Twelve schools earned a national energy star efficiency award under his watch.

The four goals include providing high-quality education, promoting a healthy work environment for educators, working with community leaders, and creating an action plan to aid schools experiencing issues more efficiently.

In a video statement released by Boone County Schools, Turner said,“It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve as your superintendent. I look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of this remarkable educational community.”

Through the many works of Turner and the strategic plan, Boone County Schools are prepared to set students up for success.
