HEBRON, Ky. — A longtime Northern Kentucky resident is now sharing his love for reading with the world. Jim Fiorelli, 73, uses his YouTube channel, "Pjs & Pillows," to read children's books aloud.
Fiorelli said his home has always been filled with books and estimates he has around 3,000. He decided to pick up the hobby to better himself and connect with his long-distance family, including 14 grandchildren. He added introducing books to children at a young age teaches life lessons.
According to Kids Kingdom Early Learning Center, story time has many benefits, including increasing early literacy and language development, concentration and social and communication skills.
Fiorelli said he’s used these ideals and implanted them into his own practice of raising his children over the years.
"Their writing skills will improve; their grades will improve in school," Fiorelli said. "I'm a father of 10, and all my kids are pretty darn smart … and I think they they love to read as well."
Life structures can affect how often parents and caretakers get to read to children when they come home from work, Fiorelli said.
"It's a rough thing for them to do when they're exhausted at the end of the day," he said.
With this challenge in mind, he made sure kids learn life lessons even at bedtime, whether it be developing their minds or learning essential social skills.
“There's lots of good information in kids' books," Fiorelli said, "and it just so happens that some of them deal with morals and personal challenges.”
Fiorelli already has more than 700 YouTube subscribers and 77 videos.
