NEWPORT, Ky. — Matt Lehman of Newport has thrown his hat in the ring to run as a Democrat for state representative of Kentucky’s 67th House District. The seat is being vacated by State Rep. Rachel Roberts, D-Newport, who also serves as the minority whip in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

“I was motivated to enter politics to counter extremists dismantling our institutions of democracy, education and justice,” Lehman said in a news release. “I look forward to being a respectful representative for Kentucky’s 67th district and a serious legislator to help our Commonwealth move forward.” 

Lehman said he was grateful for Roberts’ dedicated service to the community.

“Our district is booming with new jobs and companies, infrastructure investment and cultural activities,” he shared.

But he said there was still “significant work to do,” citing issues like teacher pay, the opioid crisis and abortion access.

Lehman, 46, is a Northern Kentucky native who graduated from Covington Catholic High School and the University of Louisville. He also holds a master’s degree from Columbia University. He has managed and founded several health care companies and continues to work in the biotechnology field. Lehman lives with his family in Newport. 

The Democrat challenged incumbent U.S. House Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., for the District 4 congressional seat but lost by more than 87,000 votes. 

Kentucky 67th House District includes Bellevue, Dayton, Newport, Wilder, Woodlawn, much of Highland Heights and Southgate, and parts of Cold Spring and Fort Thomas in Campbell County.

Roberts, who announced on Dec. 20 she would not run for reelection, has represented the district since 2020.
