BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — At Drakes Creed Middle School, students will see a new face leading their school. That’s because a new principal has been selected to head the Warren County School.

What You Need To Know

  • Bonnie Spears is the new principal for Drakes Creek Middle School

  • Spears has been involved in education for over 20 years

  • She has been an assistant principal and teacher prior to her new job

  • She will start on Jan. 2, 2024

Bonnie Spears, a former assistant principal and teacher, has been in education for over 20 years, and was one of the three finalists. Eventually, Spears was nominated, and will start her new job on Jan. 2, 2024.

In a press release, superintendent Rob Clayton said, “We are excited and honored to welcome Mrs. Bonnie Spears to Warren County Public Schools and the Drakes Creek Middle School community. Mrs. Spears is a proven collaborative leader with high expectations for students and staff, which aligns closely with our vision and mission for student success. Her principal experience, along with her personalized approach toward teaching and learning, will be a valuable asset in leading Drakes Creek to even greater heights in the future.”

When asked, Spears said she was, “Excited, thrilled and ready-to-go.”

When she got the phone call that she got the job, she described it as a “a surreal moment.”

But now that she has the job, her objectives are clear: Lead the school by getting to know her students, which she says will help with academic success.

“You guys getting to know me, and me getting to know you as well as far as relationship-building, I’m going to start that day one,” she said to a crowd of teachers and students.

“It is evident that they are focused on students through building relationships and have high expectations to foster academic success. I look forward to meeting the students and working with the families and community,” Spears remarked in a news release.

One might think it is a little odd transitioning mid-year, so Spectrum News 1 asked Clayton if there will be struggles that the school might face when switching principals.

“We’ve done this before. It’s not unprecedented. But, I’m very optimistic that it’s going to be a smooth transition for all,” Clayton said.

And when she does transition, Spears will be able to use her passion for helping kids to become successful.

“It’s really the pivotal point of school. I enjoy working with students that age, helping them, and figuring out what they want to do with their next steps in high school,” Spears concluded.
