LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The former Louisville Metro Police detective who shot and killed Breonna Taylor testified in the federal trial of his former colleague, Brett Hankison.

Former detective Myles Cosgrove, who fired the shot that killed Breonna Taylor, testified there isn’t a day that he doesn’t think about it and if he had all the facts that he now knows about the 2020 raid on her home, the outcome would be different. 

Cosgrove was called to the stand in the federal trial of former LMPD detective Brett Hankison.

According to an indictment, officers broke down the door of Taylor’s apartment, her boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, fired one shot and LMPD officers returned fire.

Prosecutors say Hankison fired his gun blindly 10 times into Taylor’s apartment, even though it was impossible to see who was inside. 

Cosgrove said officers are never allowed to fire blindly and called Hankison’s shots “unfathomably dangerous.” 

The jury also heard from Taylor’s sister, Juniyah Palmer, who lived with Taylor, but said she wasn’t home at the time of the shooting.

She said it was devastating to know that her room was riddled with bullets and she could have been shot.   

The defense argues Hankison’s actions were an attempt to save his fellow officers. None of his rounds hit anyone, and he wasn’t the last to fire.

Hankison was fired from LMPD on June 23, 2020. Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes were both fired from the force on Jan. 6, 2021.
