LOUISVILLE, Ky. — We are a day away from ghosts, goblins and princesses showing up at doors around Kentucky looking for perfect sweet treats.

What You Need To Know

  • Caufield's Novelty is a local costume store in Louisville.

  •  The family-owned business has been around for over 100 years

  •  Caufield Johnson, one of the owners of the store, says this past weekend was busy.

Decked out in horror film collectibles, Caufield’s Novelty in Louisville is welcoming in last-minute costume buyers.

“We still have some left, but it’s definitely looking sparse in our costume room as opposed to what it was a couple of weeks ago,” Tracy Caufield Johnson said.

Caufield Johnson, who owns the business with her brother, says the store saw heavy traffic this past weekend.

“At one point we became so overwhelmed with the counter, pick up orders and trying to help our in-store customers, we had to shut down the counter, pick up orders and just let people come online in because stuff was selling out quicker than we could pull it.”

The National Retail Federation predicts national Halloween spending will reach over $12 billion this year.

Caufield Johnson says “Scream” has been the best seller this year. Scream, first hit movie screens in 1996 and the latest film in the horror franchise made it to theaters in March.

“You always have your horror characters that are the top sellers. This year, however, instead of Michael Myers, it’s been Scream more than Michael Myers. So a little different,” said Caufield Johnson. She added, “But we tend to know that movies and that kind of thing really guide what’s going to be popular for the year.”

Caufield’s Novelty has been serving the Louisville community for over 100 years and is open all-year round.
