Since 2014, Kentuckians have come together to invest  $50.6 million into local organizations. Nonprofits across Louisville are collecting donations for their causes.

There are dozens of organizations dedicated to bettering our community. Everything from animals to health and wellness.

One organization taking part in Give for Good Day is dedicated to helping veterans.

Brad Barnes served our country for nine years as a flight medic in the U.S. Army. Now he spends his days helping others at the Active Heroes retreat in Shepherdsville.

“Spending time with veterans when they come out. A lot of them don’t have a place to go. They feel comfortable talking to people, but when they have another veteran, that’s shared the same experience, they’re more out to open up and talk,” said Barnes.

The retreat allows veterans from all over the country to stay in a cabin, take part in outdoor activities like disc golf and archery and explore the 150-acre hideaway.

Give for Good Day is one of the biggest fundraisers Active Heroes participates in all year.

“It’s very expensive to run this place because there’s so much land and grass to cut and maintenance,” said Barnes.

Last year, the organization raised $38,000.

“We serve the whole military community. And it’s a place where our community and veterans get together and provide support and help for veterans in an effort to help prevent veteran suicide,” said Active Heroes Executive Director Athena Williamson.

According to USO, military suicide rates are four times higher than deaths that occurred during military operations, and close to 17 veterans die by suicide every day.

Active Heroes strives to create a place where veterans can connect with others.

All in hopes to continue giving for good.

Active Heroes is just one example of the dozens of organizations participating in Give for Good Day this year.
