FRANKFORT, Ky. — With the launch of sports betting in Kentucky drawing near, several racetracks and online betting services have already submitted applications to operate in the state.

What You Need To Know

  • Seven horsetracks and several online betting sites have applied to get in on sports betting in Kentucky

  • There are 14 locations in Kentucky eligible to host on-site sports betting

  • One notable absence is Keeneland in Lexington, which has yet to apply

  • Sports betting will launch in Kentucky on Sept. 7, 2023

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, D-Ky., announced the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission had received applications from seven of the state’s licensed racetracks. The following tracks have applied so far:

  • Churchill Downs
  • Cumberland Run
  • Ellis Park
  • Oak Grove Gaming and Racing
  • The Red Mile
  • Sandy’s Gaming and Racing
  • Turfway Park

One notable absence from the list is the Keeneland racetrack in Lexington. There are 14 racetrack and racetrack satellite locations across the state eligible to apply.

Racetracks licensed for sports wagering may open retail sports wagering facilities at their satellite locations, Beshear noted.

Here’s a list of online/mobile sports betting platforms that have applied for a license to operate in Kentucky:

  • Bet365
  • BetMGM
  • Caesars
  • Circa
  • DraftKings
  • FanDuel
  • Penn Sports Interactive

"The countdown is on. Kentuckians can plan to place their first sports wagers, at a retail location, in just 28 days,” said Beshear. “Bringing sports wagering to the state not only gives Kentuckians a much-anticipated new form of entertainment, but also brings money to the state to support pensions, freeing up money that can be used to build a better Kentucky through the funding of education, economic development, disaster recovery and other necessary projects, like providing cleaner water, building roads and high-speed internet.”

An application does not guarantee licensure. The applications are being reviewed by KHRC staff and will be voted on at a meeting of the full commission Aug. 22.
