LOUISVILLE, Ky. — By the end of this month, a Louisville non-profit is hoping to show the community its impact on the vulnerable population.
Right now, The Hope Buss is in the middle of their first-ever "31 Days of Hope" campaign.
Founder and Executive Director Stachelle Bussey and the organization are asking for donations to help bring in more funds for their operations, including The Hope Village.
“I’m taking you back here and so where the renovation is happening. We’re transitioning from our tents to our pods,” Bussey said. “I couldn’t imagine, you know, years ago that I’d be here. But I’m very, very grateful for the opportunity to serve our houseless community. And then like to upgrade them because they deserve the best, right? We’re human, right? Everyone deserves a community, and the tent was just, you know, they wore out.”
Their current project is focused on The Hope Village, housing people inside one of these repurposed pods.
“I had got an email from a CVS, the executive director, and they had these kinds of pods that they were using during COVID, but they were trying to get rid of. And it was about the same cost, but we still didn’t have it. We were a small organization,” she explained.
The small organization is taking big strides, asking for just one-dollar donations all month long — and gaining visibility.
“I can’t do much, but I got one dollar right. And the dollar, you know, for some of us it’s like, okay, it’s a dollar, but one dollar here is a meal. One dollar here is a TARC ticket. One dollar, you know, it is a bottle of water. One dollar here means so much more to us than it’s just a dollar,” Bussey said.
The dollar stretches and even with construction on campus, the houseless folks didn’t get displaced.
“I think it’s been incredible for the residents to see the transition because, you know, to see them out there, even to see them come here, and actually today, our first ten are going in and I am so excited about that,” Bussey said.
Because the larger picture takes the ‘it takes a village’ motto to a new level.
“And when the community invests in this, we won’t just have one Hope Village site. We need to have multiple sites because this is the solution that works,” Bussey said.
Their first-ever fundraising event is called the “31 Days of Hope” campaign. Donations from this event will help bring in more funds for their operations, including The Hope Village.
