LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Recovery Café Lexington has created a sense of community for its members by having different events and activities for people in recovery.

Aaliyah Cowan visited the café yesterday for its first Zen art class.

What You Need To Know

  •  The Recovery Café Lexington has events that give people in recovery the opportunity to express themselves through art

  •  The café hosted its first Zen art class and there were several people who participated. When the class was done, lunch was provided and people could get a haircut

  • Aaliyah Cowan participated in the art class and enjoyed it. She says that working on art gives her an escape

  • Cowan has been in recovery for a few years and credits support from loved ones

Several members of Cowan’s family struggled with addiction, which ultimately led her down the same path.

“Starting at, like, age seven, I felt like I was doomed,” said Cowan.

She’s had several overdoses and at the age of 24 had a very close call.

“I woke up and there was a body bag sitting out ‘cause they were about to call it, you know, quits for me,” said Cowan. “When you wake up to a body bag, that’s scary.”

Now at 28-years-old, Cowan is four months sober. The friends she has made along the way, having the support of loved ones, and engaging in activities like Saturday’s art class have helped her throughout her recovery journey.

“It helps me because it gives me different coping skills to, you know, kind of escape my mind at times,” said Cowan.

People also had the opportunity to grab lunch while at the café and get a haircut.

This class will be on the first and third Saturdays of every month.
