LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Baptist Health Louisville is giving students an opportunity to learn careers in the health field.
Twins Shriya and Sanhita Kutumbaka are striving to be medical professionals.
“I’ve wanted to go into the medical field since the beginning of high school and I think this program really helps me like envision that and see that that’s definitely where I want to go,” said Sanhita Kutumbaka.
To learn more about the journey ahead, they are two of 16 high schoolers taking part in the Baptist Health Louisville’s first annual three-day Medical Academy.
On Friday, the students learned orthopedic care.
“We used a saw to blade off part of the cast so we could take it off...” said Sanhita Kutumbaka.
“We just have to move the instrument back and forth and it was like cutting through the cast,” said Shriya Kutumbaka. “We learned that it doesn’t cut through skin and it’s built so that it doesn’t harm the patient.”
The academy gives students a chance to receive hands-on learning and get an in-depth look at the day-to-day workings in the health field.
“The program is really to educate our youth before they choose a career. A lot of people that aren’t in the health care world just think of clinical when they think of health care,” said Alex Givens, Baptist Health Louisville’s Human Resources partner. “You know, your MDs, your nurses.. So we really want to expose them to other area that make healthcare what it is.”
The twins have made the most of their time at the hospital. Throughout the week they have learned about roles ranging from human resources, food services to emergency services.
“During COVID we really didn’t have these opportunities, but now getting to see this, it feels really good being part of this program,” said Sanhita Kutumbaka.
They’ll be taking what learned during the program to their next chapter.
“We both graduated, so now we are headed off to the University of Pittsburg and there’s tons of medical opportunities there. So we are excited to take part in that,” said Sanhita Kutumbaka.
Baptist Health Louisville plans to continue hosting the Medical Academy to inspire the next generation of professionals.
They hope to expand the program to a week long learning opportunity next year.
