LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Savannah DeMelo, Racing Louisville FC's explosive star midfielder, was the first called up by the U.S. Women's National Team for World Cup duties. But in a matter of weeks, three of her teammates have also been selected to rosters.

The USWNT unveiled its star-studded roster Wednesday, which also includes mainstays Alex Morgan (San Diego Wave), Kelley O'Hara (NJ/NY Gotham) and Megan Rapinoe (OL Reign). Angel City's 18-year-old standout Alyssa Thompson is also makig her World Cup debut on the squad.

DeMelo joined Racing Louisville as the fourth overall pick in the 2022 NWSL draft. She started in all 22 games during her rookie season, logging the most minutes of any Racing player that year.

"I am honored to have been selected to represent my country at the Women’s World Cup,” DeMelo said. “This has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I have so many people to thank, but I’ll start with my family, friends, team and staff. This wouldn’t be possible without any of you, and I am just beyond grateful for this opportunity. Let's go USA!”

DeMelo ranks among the NWSL's best in a number of categories, including fouls won and fouls won in the attacking third (first), goal-creating actions (fifth), shot-creating actions (sixth), scoring chances created (eighth), touches in the opponent's box (19th) and tackles won (20th). 

DeMelo isn't the only Racing player to make a roster. Racing Louisville forward Uchenna Kanu will play for Nigeria. 

 

On Friday, June 23, Thembi Kgatlana became the third Louisville Racing member to joins a World Cup team. Kgatlana will represent South Africa. 

Louisville Racing has two other players hoping to be called up by their respective National Teams. They are: Alex Chidiac of Australia and Wang Shuang of China.

On Tuesday, June 27, Ary Borges found out she was called up to represent Brazil. 

The FIFA Women's World Cup returns next month, with matches being hosted in Australia and New Zealand starting July 20. 

This year, the U.S. looks to pursue a three-peat as the defending World Cup champions, having won the title in 2019 and 2015 in France and Canada respectively.

The U.S. Women's National Team's next international friendly is scheduled for July 9 in San Jose, California. The U.S. kicks off group play in the FIFA Women's World Cup on July 21, facing off against Vietnam in Auckland, New Zealand.
