Kentucky State Police say a deputy with the Olive Hill Police Department was sitting in his car when a gunshot came through the windshield at approximately 3:14 p.m. in Carter County. The officer was injured when the glass burst, KSP said.

Wesley Cornell, 30, of Vanceburg was arrested by KSP Tuesday and booked into the Carter County Detention Center on charges of attempted murder and wanton endangerment of a police officer. He is being held on $1 million cash bond.

Though KSP hadn’t identified the officer, Joe Preston, with the Olive Hill Police Department, posted on Facebook that the bullet just missed his head, but that he was fine. He said he just had glass in his forearm.

Trooper Shane Goodall with the KSP Ashland said Preston was airlifted to St Mary's Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
