The blaze started late Monday night and has grown to consume nearly 100 acres, Beshear and emergency management officials said Thursday.
Dozens of local, state and federal firefighters are responding to the fire in Slade. No structures have been threatened but officials have closed all cottages, trailheads and parking lots in the area.
The Red River Gorge Geological Area remains open, but visitors are asked to be careful when camping or hiking. Visibility may be affected, but campgrounds will be open for campers this weekend.
“Our largest concern is the approaching weather front and the winds it brings to the area,” said Division of Forestry Director/State Forester Brandon Howard. “We feel we are in a good place with our control efforts but this afternoon will be difficult and dangerous for our firefighters.”
Once the fire is contained and the spread is stopped, crews will turn their efforts into controlling the fire by extinguishing any smoldering material and reinforcing control lines. The cause of the wildfire is under investigation, Beshear said.
While there is no current danger to the park’s lodge and cottages, it is unknown when the park will be able to reopen its trails.
“Kentucky is still in spring wildfire hazard season, which lasts until April 30, and we urge everyone to use great caution when outdoors or when burning debris during this season,” said Division of Forestry Director/State Forester Brandon Howard.
April is typically a high month in terms of wildfires and with the Red Flag burn warning in effect this week, officials are urging folks to avoid burning things outdoors. The KDF has responded to 628 wildland fires since January 1.
