LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An unidentified suspect fired a gun into a crowd of hundreds in a Kentucky park, leaving two people dead and four wounded Saturday night, police said.

Police were called to Chickasaw Park on Southwestern Parkway around 9 p.m., authorities said.

“Hundreds of people were in the park at the time of the shooting, when someone started shooting into the crowd, hitting at least six people,” Louisville Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey said.

Officers arrived at the park to find multiple people with gunshot wounds, two of which were fatal. Four people were transported to University of Louisville Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

Officials confirmed that the two deceased victims were both adult males. The other victims are an adult female and three adult males. By Sunday morning, officials said one of those had already been treated and released from the hospital and one that was in critical condition had been stabilized.

There were no suspects in custody immediately after the shooting and police asked anyone with information to contact investigators.

“As of right now we have no witnesses,” Humphrey said.

“This has been an unspeakable week of tragedy for our city,” Mayor Craig Greenberg said at the scene Saturday night, referring to a shooting on Monday in which a gunman killed five Louisville bank employees while livestreaming the attack on Instagram.

“On Monday, we lost five of our fellow citizens to a horrific act of workplace gun violence,” Greenberg said. “And now, five days later, we’re at another scene of a reckless act of gun violence.”

President Joe Biden addressed the Louisville shooting, as well as a shooting in Dadeville, Ala., that also occured Saturday night. "This morning, our nation is once again grieving for at least four Americans tragically killed at a teen’s birthday party in Dadeville, Alabama as well as two others killed last night in a crowded public park in Louisville. Jill and I are praying for their families, and for the many others injured and fighting for their lives in the wake of this weekend’s gun violence," the president said.

Police were not aware of any special event taking place at the park on Saturday night. Alicia Smiley, a police spokesperson, said the crowd was not unusual considering the nice weather.
