Monday’s mass shooting at Old National Bank, which killed five employees, set into motion a massive emergency response from Metro Louisville and numerous supporting agencies.

First responders included 18 members of Metro Emergency Medical Services. On Friday, four EMS officers were promoted in a ceremony that’s been scheduled for weeks, but Mayor Craig Greenberg took this opportunity to say "thank you" to all responders.

“It is more fitting than ever that we are going here today at the end of a tragic week her in Louisville to promote you all to your new positions and to thank you and all your colleagues for your amazing, heroic and important work," Greenberg said. "You chose a career dedicated to caring for others, caring or people in need, caring for people in urgent times of crime like what we saw on Monday when your teams ran into the unknown."

One of the officers receiving a promotion is 18-year veteran of Metro EMS, Mark Fuqua. Fuqua was on the ground Monday in the wake of the shooting.

“I stepped in and took one of the regular roles of a transport officer to make sure we knew where everybody was going and how many people we transported. All the things," Fuqua said.

Fuqua directed the transport of the wounded to the hospital and was asked how it feels knowing when a patient survives.

“That’s what  gets most of us through every day, is what good did we do," he added.

“You help people," Greenberg said. "You save lives at your own risk. Thank you Lt. Col. Fuqua for responding to this tragedy and thank you to Major Dozier for taking over a channel so a supervisor could respond."

Lt. Col. Fuqua was also asked if he ever considers himself a hero for the actions taken Monday. He said, “I never consider myself a hero. It was just what I was called to do.”

Dallas Chesser was promoted to major, as was Harry Dozier. Joshua Ford is now a captain and, again, Mark Fuqua was promoted to lieutenant colonel.
