LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville Metro Animal Services announced it is over capacity with animals and is asking the public to pitch in by adopting a pet.

In a Facebook post, the agency made a desperate plea for help for what the group described as a “dire” situation. “We are starting our day with no open dog kennels. We’ve taken in over 110 dogs, almost 100 cats and seven rabbits in less than two weeks,” the group said.

The animal shelter says it is caring for over 225 animals, with dog crates in the hallways and dogs paired up in kennels.

They are urgently asking for people to adopt, foster or rescue a pet if possible, especially dogs over 40 lbs.

If you have a pet, especially a dog, at the shelter you can also come by to identify it and take it home.

They also announced they are waiving adoption and redemption fees now through May 1, 2023. There is a $10 pet license fee for Jefferson County.
