LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Three days after extreme winds knocked out power for thousands, many have yet to see their lights come back on. Those outages have left some without access to food.

Because of this, Dare to Care Food Bank held three emergency food distributions on Monday.

One of the people affected by the storm says she’s thankful the food bank was there to help.

“It’s been a blessing for them to come through and distribute food for some of us who really don’t have any, and who have lost (food) during this storm,” Glennis Smith, a resident of Louisville’s west end, said.

Smith first lost power Friday afternoon and says it stayed off for around 24 hours.

“My power is back on, thank God it’s back on and everything’s okay, and I really didn’t lose a lot, and I’m grateful for that one because I had just went to the grocery store Thursday,” Smith said.

Over a dozen volunteers loaded up people’s front seats and trunks with shelf-stable food, including a few high schoolers, who were not in school Monday. Jefferson County Public Schools canceled classes because of several schools still being without power.

One of those volunteers is Male High School senior Lainey Frye.

“It’s nice because you see the support of the community and how we all are all here to help each other,” Frye said.

Dare to Care brought two box trucks full of food to each distribution site. They planned to give out 1,200 meals.

Vincent James, the Dare to Care Food Bank CEO, says, this is their way of giving back.

“Look in on your neighbor. Check in to see if they’re okay or if they need assistance. We can help one another as well as the organization can help, and so that’s what’s really powerful about our opportunity that we have today,” James said.

Food distributions will continue Tuesday at these three sites:

Portland Avenue Church of Christ

  • 2500 Portland Ave.
  • 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Holy Name Catholic Church

  • 2933 S. Fourth St.
  • 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Ormsby Heights Baptist Church

  • 2120 Lower Hunters Trace
  • 5 p.m. - 6 p.m.     

James added they will monitor power outages to see if additional food distributions after Tuesday will be needed.
