The program would offer first responders and their families an incentive for choosing Midway for their undergraduate, graduate or advanced degree education.

“We look to partner with different businesses, organizations, community groups, and first responders was one that we felt had been overlooked,” said Midway University President John Marsden.

Thursday, the university of 1,900 announced a 15% tuition discount on its evening and online courses to first responders and their families.

“Our average cost per credit hour for undergraduate programs is $395 and with the discount, it will now be $333.75,” Marsden said.

Employees and their families can work toward a bachelors, masters or advanced degrees in over 20 different areas.

“We have online programs in sport management, business. We’ve also got psychology, criminal justice. Many of our majors are professional and align with career paths,” Marsden said.

Marsden said the program to his knowledge is unique to the university.

“There are other programs out there with other universities that are working with different organizations but I’m not aware of any working specifically with first responders,” Marsden said.

The discount is a part of Midway’s Business Advantage program and is open to first responders and their immediate families at any department in the Commonwealth.

“When I sent out the email for this announcement, you know, I got a response immediately from one officer,” said Versailles Police Chief Mike Murray.

Murray said many of his officers have an undergraduate degree and have expressed interest in furthering their education.

“With Midway University announcing this special tuition price to work towards furthering their education, I think it’s a great thing,” Murray said.

Marsden said the new incentive for first responders will help the small university in rural Woodford County remain an option for people in their education journey.

“Midway has had seven years of enrollment growth and this is an opportunity for us to remain relevant and to continue to grow as an institution,” Marsden said.

Murray believes the program could help retain and recruit officers in the first responder field.

Those who are interested in taking advantage of the tuition reduction should reach out directly to the Midway University Admissions office at admissions@midway.edu or calling 859-846-5722.
