LEXINGTON, Ky. — Dozens of people gathered near downtown Lexington and walked two miles to support the Lexington Rescue Mission’s efforts to help those experiencing homelessness.
The organization has several programs, including ones to assist people who are re-entering their communities after being incarcerated and who are struggling with substance use.
“We have employment services and other wrap-around services that we help folks with when they come to us at the mission so if employment is an issue, we’re there to help, but we also help with basic needs, with food,” said Laura Carr, the executive director of the Lexington Rescue Mission.
The organization is currently receiving up to 12 requests for housing assistance per day, according to the Lexington Rescue Mission.
“The walk is so important because what we do is we help people who end up in that situation, they end up homeless, we can get them into affordable housing quickly and so they’re not homeless for very long,” said Carr.
The money raised from last year’s event helped with placing 90 adults and 25 children into housing.
