ERLANGER, Ky. — Sunday was a prep day for many employees working at Swan Floral and Gift Shop in Erlanger for what they consider the busiest one day of the year.

What You Need To Know

  •  Valentine's Day is Tuesday

  •  Local florists say they're already prepping for a busy day in business

  •  Florists say they too are experiencing inflation impacts

  • They say the cost for flowers is up right now as a result of inflation

“Valentine’s Day is busy because it’s all centered on one day,” said Dave Schreiver, one of the owners of the shop.

Schreiver said like many businesses, they too are impacted by the harsh realities of inflation.

“Just the price of getting product to us has made all of our flowers a little more expensive day in and day out,” he said.

Schreiver said roses can sometimes go up in price this time of year because of the high demand.

“They can’t just put more plants in the ground because the rest of the year they wouldn’t be able to do anything with those flowers. So they take and cut back all the rose plants in December and throw those flowers away. So on Valentine’s Day, you’re paying for the one they threw away and the one you got,” Schreiver said.

But it’s not just roses that are up in price. Like he said, everything is up in cost.

He said that doesn’t mean people looking to get some flowers need to spend a ton. There are ways to stick to the budget.

“We can do an arrangement with some roses in it and we can fit any budget that you have. You don’t have to spend a million dollars, but you can still get a nice bouquet,” he said.

Swan Floral and Gift Shop has been in business over a century now, and Schreiver said they’re ready to tackle a big day in business once again. He said they’ll begin bright and early Tuesday morning and will have trucks sent out on routes to deliver flowers to people for the holiday.
