BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The University of Louisville Mary and Elizabeth hospital has an in-patient detox unit where people can start their journey to overcoming their addiction.

What You Need To Know

  • The service is available for anyone 18 and older, and right now, the unit features 14 patient rooms and has the ability to serve 25 patients

  • Lack of sleep, especially with alcohol use, weight gain and who are unable to maintain a job or normal routine are signs someone may be battling with alcohol or substance abuse

  • The detox inpatient unit also has financial counselors to help navigate Medicare and Medicaid

For about three years, Jessica Baird has worked in the detox unit. She is the nurse manager, helping patients as they part from relying on alcohol and substances.

“I’ve seen a lot of people come through and have custody of their children again, maintain a stable job and living environment, so it’s huge to make that change,” Baird said.

The service is available for anyone 18 and over, and right now, the unit features 14 patient rooms and has the ability to serve 25 patients.

“There’s not really that stigma of a psychiatric facility or a stand-alone detox unit and we’re voluntary,” Baird said.

Patients have access to group therapy and can offer peer support to those who are still in recovery

“They are very helpful with patients that are afraid or uncertain about this new life that they’re living," Baird said.

Baird said for those who aren't battling addiction, they might be able to help someone who is looking for signs of addiction.

“Lack of sleep especially with alcohol use, weight gain, unable to maintain a job or normal routine" are some of those signs, Baird said.

Anyone who may be struggling is welcome, no matter if they have insurance or not. The detox inpatient unit also has financial counselors to help navigate Medicare and Medicaid.
