FORT WRIGHT, Ky. — Jan. 1 is the start of a new chapter for many people. Goals, resolutions, and a fresh start loom. Katie Gaskamp, general manager at both Pure Barre and Club Pilates in Fort Wright, said people will look to get back into old fitness routines or look into trying something new.

What You Need To Know

  •  Katie Gaskamp is a general manager at Pure Barre and Club Pilates in Fort Wright

  •  She said the new year means some may get back into old fitness routines from before the holidays and others may try something new

  •  Gaskamp said people should take advantage of free or discounted trial classes to help figure out if a certain gym or workout style is right for you

  • She also said people should set fitness goals and be in it for the right reasons

Suzannah Shehan came into Club Pilates on Sunday to start the year on a positive note.

“Just wanting to try something new for the new year and start some healthy habits and start the year off right,” Shehan said.

Gaskamp said January definitely is the start for people to look into new things fitness-related. Regardless if you’re getting back into it or starting something new, Gaskamp said to be in it for the right reasons.

“It doesn’t need to be focused on your weight, your size, what you did over the last few months, the ‘Oh I’ve gotta get back to it and punish myself’ like no. It’s just about do you need fifty minutes to yourself? Good. Do you need to move your body? Yes! We all do. So that’s a big focus. And then a community.”

She’s been with Pure Barre for about 11 years and managing for about six years now and knows everyone’s built to look and be different, which could mean trial and error is in order to finding what workout works for you best.

“Every single workout is not a good fit for everybody. There’s different personalities, different things for injuries, so we encourage people to try it and if it’s not your vibe then go try something else,” she said.

Gaskamp said a lot of places offer discounts or free trial classes for newcomers and to take advantage of that on this journey. Shehan said the thing you can do is just show up and try something.

“I feel like getting out of the house is the hardest thing to do,” Shehan said.

Gaskamp said it’s worth it to build on a new skillset and improve while having some fun and getting to know a community of people.
