LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville police are investigating nine shootings that occurred over the weekend, including two homicides.
The violence does not appear to be connected to one person or event, according to Lt. Col. Steve Healey with the Louisville Metro Police Department.
“The way they are connected, though, is we’ve had individuals that have decided to make poor decisions and utilize a handgun to solve their differences,” he said. “Every one of these shootings could have easily been prevented this weekend had someone made a better decision.”
City records show a 33% decrease in nonfatal shootings and a nearly 11% decrease in homicides in the past year.
Healey attributed that reduction to several factors.
“We’re also continuing to utilize our violent crime reduction detail where we are having a more visible presence in the neighborhoods, and to be honest with you, we are getting more cooperation from our community partners.”
Despite the overall decrease in the number of shootings, Healey called the level of gun violence “unacceptable.”
Metro Council President David James (D-6) said public safety should be Mayor-elect Craig Greenberg’s top priority when he takes office next month.
“I think it’s illegal guns, and I think that it is gang slash group activity, domestic violence,” James said. “It’s really across the board and so finding ways to be able to address that and combat that in many different ways so that our community is safer, so that our citizens are safer, I just think it’s job one.”
