LEXINGTON, Ky. — Police have placed a suspect in custody after reports of gunshots near the Tates Middle School campus Friday morning. Officers found the suspect, who they say is not a student, at his home.

The police also said they found evidence of gunshots taking place just outside the middle school. The Fayette County Public Schools Police Department will charge the suspect with felony wanton endangerment.

Because of the incident, the middle school was placed on a lockdown just before 11 a.m. “out of an abundance of caution,” officials said. The lockdown and heightened alerts were lifted just after noon on Friday.

“I am proud of the way our students and staff at all three schools responded today,” said Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins. “Everyone took immediate action and followed district safety protocols to keep our students and staff safe and our families informed.”

The incident marks the second gun-related incident to lock down schools in Fayette County in just over a week. Police locked down Henry Clay High School on Oct. 27 after a gun was discovered in a student's backpack.
