GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Mayoral candidates from all over the state are getting ready for Election Day. In Georgetown, two long time Scott County residents are looking for votes.
Being a people person, Burney Jenkins says, is one of his many qualities.
“I came here with you know, with everything I own. One suitcase. Everything within that one suitcase and I came here to better myself,” Jenkins said.
Originally from Tennessee, from a family of 11, Jenkins attended Georgetown College and upon graduation he became involved in the community.
“I got a job. It was Scott County Schools and stayed here for 46 years, you know, and it gave me an opportunity to work in leadership roles with kids and with people of all races of all diversity. So I owe this community more than this community owes me,”Jenkins said.
Jenkins is running against David Lusby for Georgetown Mayor, and says if elected, he intends to make the people a priority.
“As mayor, you should go out and actually talk to people,” Jenkins said.
With his 46 years in education, Jenkins says he has heard concerns from many of his former students who are still living within the county.
“That’s how you find out what people are concerned about. You can’t get concerned or know about people’s concerns if you don’t go ask and the people want to be heard,” Jenkins said.
Besides being transparent on decisions and conversations within the community, Jenkins says he wants to make a change where people know they matter.
“But you got to engage them. You got to engage families, and you got to give them a sense that they shouldn’t have to go to Lexington or anywhere else to find things to do here,” Jenkins said.
Election Day is Nov. 8 and Jenkins says if elected he hopes to give back to a community that has given him so much over the years. Scott County has various polling locations throughout the community.
