KENTUCKY — The death toll from catastrophic flooding in eastern Kentucky in late July has climbed to 43, Gov. Andy Beshear said Thursday.

Beshear shared the updated death count during Thursday's Team Kentucky update. Two additional deaths were caused by health conditions "directly arising from" the flooding, Beshear said.

The latest victims, whose names and ages were not revealed, were from Breathitt and Letcher counties. Beshear said there is still one person unaccounted for as of Thursday.

"Let us pray for those families and all of eastern Kentucky as we continue to try to stabilize the region and turn toward rebuilding," Beshear said.

Beshear said the Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund will be used to pay for the two funerals.

Breaking down the now 43 confirmed deaths by county:

  • 10 from Breathitt 
  • 2 from Clay
  • 19 from Knott 
  • 4 from Letcher 
  • 7 from Perry 
  • 1 from Pike

The University of Kentucky's Blue-White scrimmage will be held Saturday, Oct. 22 at Pikeville's Appalachian Wireless Arena, where donations benefitting flood relief will be accepted.
