LEXINGTON, Ky. — Three people are in custody after a shooting Wednesday night just before midnight inside the house of a University of Kentucky student.

This is the latest shooting in the community that is causing some concern for some people.

Shooting after shooting. That’s how Bryna Reed, a volunteer for BUILD, says this is a tragedy she hears about at least once a week.

“Years ago, I used to think that homicides, shootings and that stuff happened in a particular part of town. That’s not the case anymore,” Reed said.

BUILD is an organization working to resolve and change Lexington for the better. And with two daughters of her own, Reed says it’s hard to hear a shooting occurred near the University of Kentucky’s campus Wednesday night.

“I hate this for the family. I’m assuming this is a student that was sent off just like my daughter’s getting ready to be sent off to college. It kind of gives me chills to think about what that family is dealing with, what families all across Lexington are dealing with on a daily basis,” Reed said.

Wednesday night, UK and Lexington Police responded to a shooting on University Avenue inside a house party near the university’s campus.

Chief Joe Monroe says the incident resulted in 11 UK students being injured, and 3 non UK students in custody.

“One shot was fired in the residence, resulting in one individual being shot in the leg. And then shrapnel from the round hitting the concrete struck another 10 individuals that sustained minor injuries,” Monroe said.

Another shooting in Lexington is just another reason Reed says her daughter wants to leave this community.

“She wants to move out of Kentucky, not to get away from mom and dad but just to get away from Lexington because she doesn’t feel safe here,” Reed said.

Asking for a change before others get hurt, Reed says it’s a situation that affects more than the victims.

“After a shooting, everybody that was there is now at a higher risk of being a victim or even being the next one to retaliate. So it doesn’t stop when the bullet stops. So that’s just incredibly scary,” Reed said.

The University says the investigation is still ongoing, but all 11 students suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.

Police recovered two pistols from the scene, and say they believe the three suspects crashed the house party simply because they saw a party happening in the neighborhood.
