COVINGTON, Ky. — Community members lined up off of Mainstrasse Village area Saturday and Sunday to partake in the 127 or World’s Longest Yard Sale, an event sponsored by ROMA. Organizer William Dickson said he wanted to bring back a community phenomenon after it was on hiatus for a couple of years.
“Really, this is just a local version of it. Main Street in Covington is Route 127, and that’s one of the reasons it’s here. In years past, this would be where people that were moving south on the 127 or World’s Longest Yard Sale would begin, so you’d get here really early and then just move to other parts of Kentucky,” Dickson said.
Dickson said this year’s event was a bit smaller than years in the past. However, this was a chance to reintroduce community members to the event, and it allowed for some community members to sell off items in their home no longer in use.
“I feel like if other people want to appreciate it like I used to, then they should,” said Raven Ireland. Ireland was one of the community members selling items on Sunday.
“Cute tops, shoes, purses, jeans, shorts, skirts, different stuff like that… dresses, whatever,” she said.
Ireland said these items could go to people who really need them. It gave her a chance to make a little extra cash and get to know some more community members. Dickson said it was also a way for artisans to come on out and show off some of their work.
“There’s also a lot of artists down here. There’s printmakers, painters, so it’s a mix. There’s definitely antiques, and there’s just some basement treasures,” he said. He said he’d love to see more of those artists and more community members at the event in the future.
