COVINGTON, Ky. — People gathered on Saturday for the Covington Cryptid Block Party, a celebration of cryptids.

What You Need To Know

  • Organizers helped put on a Cryptid Block Party in Covington Saturday

  • Cryptids are creatures people claim to have seen but don’t have much knowledge or proof of

  • Popular cryptids include Bigfoot, Mothman, the Loveland Frogman, and more

  • Organizers hope to make this block party a yearly tradition to celebrate and talk up these creatures

“Mothman and Bigfoot. Things that people think they’ve seen and they don’t have a lot of proof about it,” said Melissa Silberstang, one of the event’s organizers. That’s what a cryptid is.

Silberstang and Amanda Wood helped organize the event, filled with vendors and chances to talk and learn about these creatures.

“I like how enthusiastic people are about them,” Wood said.

Silberstang said another big part of this is giving people a chance to learn about new creatures they haven’t heard of before. Helping to literally paint the picture on what these creatures look like, Wood with the creative side of this. She helped make photo cutouts and even made up masks on some different creatures some may know a little more close to home, like the Indescribable Octoman.

“Came out of the Ohio River in the 1950s and they called him the Indescribable Octoman. So based on that description, I made something. This is the Loveland Frogman who was seen in the 1970s in Loveland,” Wood said.

Silberstang said another creature more known to the Midwest is the Ohio Grassman.

“He’s different than the Bigfoot they say, but he’s got big feet,” she said.

They hope to make this a yearly event moving forward with more vendors and chances to learn about cryptids and maybe even share your own.

“You never know what you’ll see,” Silberstang said.
