RICHMOND, Ky. —Ten thousand packages will be sent next week to southeastern Kentucky to help those impacted by the flood.
University of Kentucky football players helped pack the donations with the help of Father Jim Sichko.
A modern day miracle is the only way Father Jim Sichko is explaining the out pour he has seen in donations.
“I think this is what we call "‘modern day loaves and fishes.’ Really what was the miracle about the loaves and fishes was not so much that everyone ate it was that everyone shared what they had so they could eat and this is a result of that,” Sichko said.
Earlier this week, Sichko created an Amazon wish list to collect donations for the communities impacted by the flood, and within the last three days he has received thousands of packages.
“For me, it’s become very overwhelming. I didn’t expect this much response from an Amazon link on a wish list,” Sichko said.
That’s when University of Kentucky Head Football Coach, Mark Stoops says his team stepped up to help pack and sort through the donations.
“They were very excited. It’s a good change of pace for them and they want to give, they want to help,” Stoops said.
Over one hundred football players went through the amazon boxes, separating and sorting through over 10,000 packages.
“They’re really good young men. We’re far from perfect, none of us are but these guys are a joy to coach and they’re really good kids and there’s a bunch of them,” Stoops said.
Stoops says they are honored to help where they can, even as they prepare for the season and say their thoughts and prayers are with their fellow Kentuckians.
“I know you’re strong, resilient and prideful people and continue to stay the course and I promise you this team will as well,” Stoops said.
Father Sichko said he will continue to accept donations throughout the weekend, and is grateful for the amount of people who have given their support to help southeastern Kentucky.
The delivery of these donations will be split up in two trips, delivering over ten thousand packages to southeastern Kentucky.
