LOUISVILLE, Ky.  — Herbert Lee, the man accused of shooting a Louisville Metro Police officer at Shawnee Park, has been indicted on federal charges of firearm possession.

A federal grand jury in Louisville indicted Lee Wednesday, July 20. Court documents say Lee was in possession of a handgun on July 10, 2022, the day of the Shawnee Park shooting. Lee has previously been convicted of felonies that prohibit him from possessing a gun.

Lee is in state custody and will be scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. A federal district judge will determine the sentence. There is no parole in the federal system.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Louisville Metro Police Department are investigating the case.

The firearm charge is a federal charge. Lee is also facing local charges, including the attempted murder of a police officer and fleeing and evading.

Lee is being held on a $1 million cash bond for allegedly shooting LMPD officer, Joshua Pickering. Lee was also shot during the July 10 incident, but he has recovered from his injuries. Officers attempted to approach Lee, who they knew had outstanding warrants, when he allegedly began shooting at them. LMPD released body camera footage of the incident.

Kentucky State Police is handling the investigation.
